Helping Haiti Heal Donation Drive and Contest!

IMPORTANT EDIT: the contest for the Signature Items has been EXTENDED for an extra week until February 6! So if you still want to donate/enter for those (including the J.K. Rowling signed Harry Potter series, the Neil Gaiman book, etc.), you still have a chance!

They've also raised over $66,000 so far, wow. :-)

I've been tweeting about this, but it just occurred to me that I never made a blog post about it. Whoops! Let me rectify that.

The HP Alliance (Harry Potter Alliance) is holding a fundraiser called "Helping Haiti Heal." They are taking donations/contest entries until January 30th February 6th (for signature items) at 11:59 PM Pacific Standard time.

Information here: http://thehpalliance.org/haiti/

Here's how it works: you go to this page and pick out a prize (or prizes) you'd like to win. For a chance to win that prize, you donate the amount indicated for Haiti via Paypal with the button below that prize. Each donation counts as one entry. YOU ARE NOT GUARANTEED TO WIN THAT PRIZE; the donation just gives you a CHANCE to win it.

So if you do this, do this mainly to help Haiti, and as a bonus you can win some cool stuff.

A lot of these prizes have been donated by the respective authors/publishing companies/creators/etc.

Currently up for a chance to win:

  • $100 donation: A set of UK edition Harry Potter books, signed by J.K. Rowling, including a handwritten note.
  • $75 donation: Guitar owned and signed by TOM FELTON (who plays movie Draco Malfoy)!
  • $75 donation: A hardback Deathly Hallows signed by the entire cast of the Harry Potter films!
  • $50 donation: Never-before-seen production art from WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE!
  • $40 donation: HARLEQUIN VALENTINE by Neil Gaiman and John Bolton, signed by Gaiman
  • $40 donation: Signed copy of Sir Terry Pratchett's WINTERSMITH
  • $40 donation: PERSONALIZED copy of UNSEEN ACADEMICALS by Sir Terry Pratchett, signed by author (five available!)
  • $40 donation: radish earrings handmade by the actress who plays Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter movies!
  • $30 donation: Signed, 1st Edition LOOKING FOR ALASKA by John Green
  • $30 donation: Signed TIGERHEART and SIR APROPOS OF NOTHING by Peter David
  • $30 donation: Signed Advanced Reader's Copy of A WIZARD OF MARS, by Diane Duane
  • $30 donation: 35 signed YA novels!
  • $10 donation: Signed photo from Ernie Hudson of GHOSTBUSTERS fame!
  • $10 donation: a chance to win one signed books from a list of books by authors including: Lev Grossman, Maureen Johnson, Carmen Agra, Melissa Anelli, Cassandra Clare, Cleolinda Jones, Lilith Saintcrow, Rosemary Clement-Moore, Karen Healey, Esther Friesner, Ethan Gilsdorf, Harry Turtledove, Jeff Duntemann, and Tanya Huff.

So, if you'd like a chance to win some one-of-a-kind items, consider donating.

I'm watching the twitter feeds (#HHH and #HelpingHaitiHeal) and it looks like things are going well so far! They made $12,000 in the first two hours, and according to TweetAHA, they broke $50K on 1/28. (I've donated $30 of that myself, and am debating whether I should donate more.)

A happy video - Gemini

Because I feel like posting a happy vid after a hard day's work - Gemini.

sung by Kagamine Rin and Len (vocaloid), and drawn/animated by Glider. English lyrics by motokokusanagi2009 + lxw. Not entirely sure who wrote the song, but they're awesome, too. If you click through to the Youtube page, the poster has a downloadable version of the video in the sidebar.

This song also has a pretty darn good English version, sung by rockleetist. (No pretty animation for that one, though.)

Kidorable - possible coupon

I followed Kidorable on twitter as a result of this contest on Sweeps4Bloggers (go enter! you have until 1/30!) and they were nice enough to send me a direct message with a coupon for a free umbrella with a $20 purchase!

If you're thinking of buying items from there anyway (and they have some really cute stuff - check out the raincoats, and the umbrellas, and the gloves), this could something to try.

DISCLAIMER: I have no idea if they're doing this for everyone, or if it's just random. YMMV.

Best instant win contest on the internet

Today, I'm going to share an unknown jewel. Which is to say, there is an entire post over on Slickdeals.net about this, but for some reason it is just not that well-known outside of SD. Which is both a shame and a boon. A shame, because it's a really easy contest to win! A boon because that's probably WHY it's such an easy contest to win. :-)

It's called Twist Txt Get, and it's run by Coca-Cola. It ends on 1/31/2010.

To enter this contest, I'm pretty sure you have to have a MyCokeRewards.com account. Which is free. This is normally a contest where you have to text in your Coke caps to win, but there's a FREE method of entry, which you can take advantage of twice a day. I'll describe that below.

The site say "someone could WIN every FIVE minutes!" so you have pretty good odds.

How to play:
  • Go to http://www.mycoke.com/home.jsp and sign up. I think they ask you to link your Coke Rewards account.
  • Click on "Twist Txt Get" in the menu on the upper-left.
  • On the new page, find the red speech bubble near the bottom that says "Official Rules!" and click on that.
  • Scroll down in the official rules until you find the "How to Enter" section. Underneath that, there should be a section titled "Alternate Method of Entry (AMOE)." Find the link in that paragraph that says "click here" and click it.
  • You should get a form filled in with your address information, if you are logged in. Check it and make sure that it's correct and click the submit button at the bottom.
  • Fill in the captcha on the next page, and click the submit button there, too.
  • See if you've won!
  • You can do this twice a day. Limit one account per person.
I have been playing once a day since early December. I won a $20 prepaid mastercard the very first time I played. Since then, I've won three more times - each time $20 prepaid cards. Only - they didn't send me $20 cards, they sent me $25 cards! Which means that I've won $100 so far.

You can also win movie tickets.

Cons:
  • They occasionally have technical problems. If you win, don't redeem again if you see your code in the "not redeemed" column after redeeming once. You will end up with two cards (at least one of which will have a $0 balance) and if you're like me, BOTH will have a $0 balance and you'll have to call them up to get it fixed. Other people have gotten $0 balance cards for no reason at all.

And recently there was a technical error where you were able to redeem, but when you were transferred over to the actual card site, you were told that your redemption number was invalid. Someone posted a solution to that particular problem in the SD post, though - so if you get that, sift through the post to find the solution. Worked for me.
  • You will have to sign up all over again if you win, on two different sites - the normal redemption site, and the card redemption sites. Lotta typing, but it's worth it. And if you win again, you can just sign in and all your info will already be filled in.

Be aware that they give you two options when you redeem - a refillable card, and a non-refillable card. If you pick the refillable card, you will need to give them your social security number. Which wasn't worth it for me.
Again, this ends on 1/31/2010 (unless they renew it). So hurry if you're going to enter!

Another last chance - head over to Sweeps4Bloggers for a chance to win a copy of Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies. Ends today!

And for another last-minute contest entry - my favorite cold winter soup is French Onion soup with french bread in it and swiss and parmesan cheese melted over the top. I use Progresso soup for this; it's pretty easy to make and so good. :-) Here's the contest I'm entering, which ends today. (I'll win those Progresso mugs yet!)

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

Quick, run - you still have time to win a "Firefly" iPod boombox. Ends today!

Food contests, mmmm...

This Katsudon recipe kit looks so tasty that I must blog about it.

It's from Destination Dinners, you have a chance to win it, if you hurry! TONIGHT IS THE LAST NIGHT TO ENTER on The Mom Buzz.

Also, whilst posting about contests and food anyway - I am determined to win a Progresso prize pack somewhere! *shakes fists* (I love those soup mugs, man.)

Here are a couple of contests running right now where you can win one:

And, to round out the food contests, you can win the cutest blender and a package of yoplait smoothie mix at the Erickson Looney Bin. (Seriously, that is one adorable little blender.)

New Year Resolutions!!!1!

I'm posting them here so I don't flake out. Super late, but I just created this blog a bit ago, so.

  1. Read at least one manga volume a day. I have such a backlog, you have no idea. STACKS of books.
  2. Drink more water. I was doing so well on cutting down on pop, and then...I dunno. I fell off the wagon.
I vow to do my best!!!1!

To keep this post from being useless - here, have some pretty music box tunes. (One of these days, I'll post about the Daughter/Servant of Evil vids. This is not that day.)

Quick contest entry!

Quick contest entry! Your View Electronics is giving away a 42" LCD TV. To enter, they'd like people to tell them why they want the TV.

I'd love to get an LCD TV like that for my parents. They do already have a 30+ inch, but are unhappy with the quality of the TV they bought. (They bought a bargain which ended up not being so much of one.) So I'd love for them to be happy with their TV again.

(I don't watch much TV myself, so it'd go to them for sure.)

Favorite sites: Paperbackswap and Swag Bucks

Here are two sites I've been visiting a lot for the last couple of months.

PaperBackSwap.com - Book Club to Swap, Trade & Exchange Books for Free.

Paperbackswap.com is a site where you can swap books with other people. If you sign up and post 10 books in good condition (see the book condition guidelines), they'll give you two FREE book credits to start you out! You can use these for any books currently posted on the site, or you can save them up for later. If a book you like isn't posted, add it to your wishlist, and you'll be in line for it when it IS posted.

When someone requests a book from you, you have to pay for the postage to send it out. BUT you'll get another book credit to "spend" on another book for every book you send out.

I read a lot of manga, and they've got a very good manga section, IMHO. Doesn't show up much when you search, but if you wishlist books you want, they come in pretty regularly. You can also set it up to show new books in your favorite genres on the front page, and you can save searches to page through later. For instance, I've got a saved search for manga posted in the last 24 hours.

I can vouch that it is a legit site. I've been a member since April 2009, and have swapped over 100 books. It's great for spending less on books you would have bought anyway, trading books you've already read, and trying out new series that you might've normally not tried due to cost. (Also, my local library isn't so good for manga, so this is a great alternative to buying them.)

Swag Bucks is just what it sounds like from the banner. Substitute it for Google, and you'll regularly "win" swag bucks (about 2-4 bucks a day) which you can redeem for prizes in their prize store.

You can also earn swag bucks by referring other people, and by searching for "swagcodes" - codes you can enter on the site that'll give you a buck or two. These swagcodes are usually only live for a few hours. You can find these on their blog, twitter feed, Facebook wall, swidget, and by downloading and installing their toolbar.

The "bucks" aren't real bucks...they're cents on the dollar...but they really add up over time. The best deal in their store currently is a $5 Amazon.com certificate for 45 swag bucks.

I've redeemed for $10 in Amazon.com certificates over the last month - and this with no referrals. I search for swagcodes pretty often, but even if you don't, I figure it's an easy $5 Amazon.com certificate a month for very little effort?

Draw with Me Animated Video + Tornado Destroys House?!?

I thought this video was pretty amazing (though sad).

And something on a more cheerful note:

Favorite deals/coupons sites

These are the coupons and deals sites that I visit/browse on a regular basis:

RetailMeNot.com is a very good coupon site. I check it first whenever I plan to make a purchase online, and some of the coupons have been invaluable. The only thing I don't like is that merchants have the ability to block submissions, so sometimes I end up doing an extra web search for coupons anyway. (Hint: merchants, blocking your submissions on RetailMeNot doesn't stop us bargain-seekers from finding coupons. It just takes a bit more effort.)

Fatwallet is a pretty popular deal site, with a bustling Hot Deals forum.

They also have a very, very useful cashback program, where you can get cash back from shopping on the web. Not much, but it adds up over time...I've gotten about $170 back since joining the site five years ago.

They post contests in their Hot Deals forum from time to time, too. I actually won a $100 certificate to Sierra Trading Post that way once.
Slickdeals.net is another well-known deal site. No cashback program, but the forums are equally busy and useful, and they're (IMHO) slightly better organized than Fatwallet. I check the main page quite often for the best deals, or to look for up-and-coming deals on the sidebar.

Bing is ostensibly a search engine (IMHO, not as good a one as google), but I don't use it for that purpose. I use it for the awesome cashback program. Like Fatwallet.com, they give you a cashback rebate if you go through their links when purchasing an item online. Cons: coupons can and do void all cashback. Pros: their cashback percent is often much higher than Fatwallet's. Around holidays, they've often got cashback for popular stores like Walmart.com and BestBuy.com that are in the 20% range.

For more info on how to best take advantage of their cashback program, please see this post on SlickDeals.net.

Money Saving Mom Just found this site a few months ago, and it fills a gap not filled by the other sites to quite the same degree - it tackles grocery and drug store deals and coupons. Slickdeals.net also has a grocery forum, but it's difficult for me to make heads or tails of everything there. Money Saving Mom breaks everything down into easily digestible bits.

They also post links to the best printable grocery coupons, which I find useful.

My favorite sites to help out

The Animal Rescue Site I have two cute and furry cats, so this is my favorite click-to-donate site. Click on a daily basis to donate food.

While you're at the Animal Rescue site, don't forget to click through the other sites. Fight world hunger and breast cancer, help with child literacy and health, and save the rainforests.

Bookcloseouts.com: Manga for $4 each

This is a pretty old secret, but if you're into manga, it's something that's good to know.

Bookcloseouts.com has a bunch of manga for $4 each. Well, some are a little more and some a little less, but mostly $4 each. They are mostly Tokyopop, but there's some Del Rey and Viz also mixed in there.

Please note: all of these are remainder books, and they usually have a black marker swish on the top and bottom.

Shipping costs vary by weight, but are pretty reasonable. They do tack on a $1 handling charge, though.

To help minimize the shipping costs, check out RetailMeNot's coupons for Bookcloseouts. They've almost always got a $5 off $35 purchase coupon.

Peter S. Beagle - The Last Unicorn and Conlan Press

Reposting this from my old blog, since I think it's important.

I've been a fan of The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle (the movie and the book) for a very long time. Recently, I stumbled across the info that Peter Beagle receives ABSOLUTELY NOTHING from any sales of the movie DVDs from anywhere other than the Conlan Press website. The companies involved pay Peter no royalties at all!

Quote from the site:

"In the meantime, back in February 2007 something VERY IMPORTANT happened — Lionsgate Entertainment released a special 25th Anniversary DVD of THE LAST UNICORN. This new edition is a huge improvement over the old one. It is digitally remastered so it looks great and has 5.1 audio, it is widescreen instead of fullscreen, it has much better packaging, and it comes with special features, including a video interview with Peter. Best of all, Lionsgate has agreed to let us sell copies of the DVD through Conlan Press, and more than half of each sale will go straight to Peter and his projects. If you plan on buying this DVD, please buy it here — because Peter will get nothing from copies sold through any other outlet."

Here's a direct link to where you can buy the DVD. You can even get it signed by the author for $10 extra.

There are also lots of other goodies on the Conlan Press site - they're selling copies of Peter's books (all of which you can also get signed), a new book (We Never Talk About My Brother - a collection of short stories), beautiful art prints, and a subscription to Peter's new 52/50 project. Peter himself gets a sizable portion of the profits from each sale.

I am not at all affiliated with Peter Beagle or the Conlan Press site; just a fan trying to spread the word.
